* The ANA’s Code of Ethics is an essential guide for nurses to understand and follow to ensure that they are doing their duty to carry out all their responsibilities necessary in a safely manner for both the patient and themselves. Two of the nine provisions from the Code of Ethics that will help to prepare for the transition from a student to a new graduate nurse will be provision three, which states that the nurse is the patient’s advocate and will do their part in protecting the patient’s rights and provide care and safety. Moreover, provision seven will help as well in the transition as it states that nurse will still engage and learn new things about the profession by doing research such as through continuing education credits or scholarly journals (Code of Ethics for Nurses, 2017).
* Provision three will help me be successful when working in the clinical setting because as a nurse, we are one of the healthcare professionals who spends the most time with the patient and getting to know them best so it is important to always advocate for them and ensure that they are getting the care they need as well as standing up for their interests and dislikes to others. Provision seven will aid in being successful as well because as time progresses, medicine and nursing care evolves to provide better outcomes and care for the patient and it might be something that I did not learn while in nursing school or has changed since then so keeping up with research like evidence-based practice while working will ensure that I am providing the best care for the patient.

The Nursing Code of Ethics was developed as a guide for carrying out nursing responsibilities in a manner consistent with quality in nursing care and ethical obligations of the profession (American Nurses Association, 2017). This serves as a guide for all nurses specially new graduates that are transitioning to a nursing job for the first time. Each provision on the nursing code of ethics addresses different aspects of ethical nursing practice that help nurses guide their practice and provide the best care for their patients. In my opinion, one of the provisions in the code of ethics for nurses that help new nurses in this transition is provision 1. Provision 1 states that nurses should practice with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person (American Nurses Association, 2017). Another provision that I believe is important for nurses to know is provision 3, this states that nurses should promote, advocate for, and protect the right, health, and safety of the patient (American Nurses Association, 2017). All of these provisions are essentials for nurses to gain clarity of how nursing should be put into practice. This framework can also serve as an aid for nurse educators as they prepare students for practice, this way new nurses are familiarized with the code of ethics (Grace et al., 2023).

Nurses should adopt all 9 provisions into their daily practice. These establish a standard of care and help nurses use ethical analysis and make appropriate decisions. Provision 1 is essential in nursing practice because respecting patient’s dignity and attributes is essential in any professional relationship. In hospitals, patients meet unfamiliar people, have to abandon their personal and social daily activities and roles, and are expected to perform tasks set for them by the medical staff, all of which factors lead to patients’ developing new needs and facing the risk of losing their dignity (Tehranineshat et al., 2020). For this reason, adopting this provision will help nurses be more successful in their practice by helping them establish a relationship with their clients that is based on respect and trust. Provision 3 is also essential in the success of nurses. With this nurses protect patient’s rights and private life. By implementing provision 3 nurses also show professionalism and promote a culture of safety. Nurses are responsible for providing proper care to all patients and if they become aware if inappropriate or questionable practice, the concern must be expressed to the person involved, focusing on the patient’s best interests as well as on the integrity of nursing practice (American Nurses Association, 2017). The Code of Ethics for Nurses is essential for all nurses specially those that are starting new in the profession. By following these provisions nurses ensure that patients will receive appropriate and fair care.
