After having read the Chapter, reflect on a current situation that you fear (preferably associated with a vocational or team-related environment)? What is it about that situation that concerns you most? What would you like to see changed?
In Conflict 101, Shearouse asserts that when something goes wrong, we are often quick to place blame. This reflection is a three-part reflection.
In your reflection, briefly introduce the situation you are facing, after your introductory paragraph. Once you have introduced the situation, take a few moments to reflect on who are you blaming? Has placing blame been helpful? To what level might you also shoulder the blame? How might shifting or adjusting the assignment of blame help improve how the conflict is perceived?
In the second part of your reflection, identify a recent occurrence where you became angry due to the actions of another person. What assumptions did you make about the other person (what was your internal scriipt)? How did that make you feel? What other explanations might there be for that individual’s behavior? How could that change your perception?
In a future module, we will work through an exercise to help you determine your preferred style for dealing with conflict. In the last paragraph before your conclusion, identify what your current “go-to” response is to conflict. What is your emotional response? How about behavioral? What do you do when conflict happens?
