Upload a 2 – 4 page essay in WORD or an equivalent document to this assignment. Include the works cited page of the texts you analyzed as the last page of the essay.
Objectives: For this assignment, we will conduct a literary analysis by using theories of Formalism/New Criticism.
Prompt: Using two specific literary works from weeks 1 – 3, analyze one or more of their formal elements (plot, diction, symbolism, etc.) and how the element(s) have contributed to their themes and meanings.
Fiction Elements: expectations, theme, plot & conflict, narrator, point of view, character, setting, figurative language, style.
Poetry Elements: theme, speaker, situation/setting, language/style, sound, structure, fixed and free forms.
Drama Elements: expectations, acts, scenes, stage directions, theme, plot & conflict, character, setting, figurative language, style.
Tasks:
Find 1 – 2 formal elements the two literary works share, such as themes and style. For your analysis to be cohesive, identify similar themes the literary works share, such as how the point of view reveals themes of mother-daughter relationships in “Everyday Use” and “Two Kinds.”
Identify key passages that illustrate these formal elements.
Determine how these formal elements contributed to their themes and meanings.
Use question(s) under “Formalist/New Criticism” from the document “Guiding Questions to Literary Criticisms” to help you focus your analysis and draft a thesis.
Write a central argument/thesis based on your findings in steps #3 & 4.
Outline your paper that will support your thesis.
Locate where you will use the textual examples you have chosen in step #2.
Draft your paper and include works cited page.
Notes:
Format your paper using MLA guidelines.
Use direct quotes to illustrate your analysis, adhering to MLA guidelines, and include properly formatted works cited page of the two literary works.
Follow up each analysis with sufficient explanation to support your thesis. DO NOT give mere plot summaries for your short response paper, for they do not show the level of critical thinking and analysis required of a college-level literature class.
Do not copy or use non-scholarly sources to support your analysis. Sites from SparkNotes and the like are not academic and often sources students plagiarize from. Instead of looking to these sources for answers, turn to your notes on the readings and the discussions we have had in class to be the basis of your argument.
Essay Structure:
In the introduction paragraph, introduce the two literary works by their titles (in quotes for short stories and poems and italics for drama),
the authors’ full names,
and a summary (in 2 – 3 sentences).Include the thesis that addresses the underlined sentence next to PROMPT.
Include multiple body paragraphs that support your thesis, centering each paragraph on one topic.
Close with a brief conclusion that wraps up your response.
