Understanding your own emotional intelligence and motivations will help you be more aware when working with clients. By identifying both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, you can help establish goals and timelines for what will work for your clients. REPLY BACK TO THIS STUDENTS POST: Helping Professionals needs good emotional intelligence so they can not be manipulated by clients or regress in their own personal life. They also need emotional intelligence to radiate positivity, motivate clients, and create a warm and welcoming environment. Having emotional intelligence allows you to be confident in who you are and your work. Being emotionally intelligent helps the HSP to deal with stressful moments. Example 1: A client brings up a triggering topic for you. You support the client by letting him/her know their feelings are valid. You also will give them skills needed to cope. You will not allow your judgement or past to hinder you from helping the client. This shows good self-awareness. Example 2: By being empathetic. This looks like allowing your client an opportunity to talk., being patient, and seeing things from their perspective. HSP can have empathy for clients and still have a good line of communication. You can be confident in your delivery as well. Ways I can improve my emotional intelligence is by practicing active listening, being open, and recognize how other people feel. Motivation for returning to school Intrinsic motivation for returning to school: I feel as if I have a calling to help others. So returning back to school, only seemed right to further my knowledge. External motivation for returning to school: To make my husband think I’m more than a stay at home mom. Also to make sure I am able to secure a good future for my family.
