Ways to test the usability of technical documents
<
The prompt: You are an intern for an organization in your major/discipline. You are asked to
<
research and analyze information on issues in your field to present at the next symposium that
<
your organization will attend. To prepare for the symposium, you are asked to write a brief
<
analysis that will go into the organization’s online repository for future use.
<
Using a search engine (Google, Google Scholar, and scholarly peer-reviewed academic articles from the UTEP Library Databases to investigate a topic/issue you want to explore in your field (Major = multidisciplinary studies focusing in mental health).

Here are the questions you have been asked to research and investigate.
<
• What are the three largest or most important professional organization in your field? (For

example, if you are construction management major, your field is construction
<
management, civil engineering, or industrial engineering); —what organizations would
<
they be members of?
<
• What are the three important journals read by people in your field?
<
• What are three important online discussion forums or bulletin boards, read by people in
<
your field?
<
• What are the date and location of an upcoming national or international professional
<
meeting (symposiums, conferences) for people in your field?

• Name and describe, in one paragraph for each, three major issues being discussed by
<
practitioners or academics in your field. For instance, nurses might be discussing the
<
effect of managed care on the quality of medical care delivered to patients. (from TC, p.

Use the same terminology discussed in the chapters. (Selection time frame for articles 2010-

present). Collect the research and investigate each of the bulleted items.

Write a 600-800- word count analysis (more is fine) in which you discuss, evaluate, and make a
<
final analysis of what you have researched.

Some items to identify in the research:
<
• Identify the item and make connections to your own field since you are an intern for the
<
organization. In other words, why should readers care?
<
• Discuss the value of creating this document for others in your field to read.

• Discuss what is missing from your analysis, and what are some ways to incorporate

these items.

Introduce the analysis. Include a thesis statement (your own about the research) and key main

points you want to make

Discuss each of the questions. If for some reason, you cannot find information on that particular
<
question then discuss why it is important for this communication tool to exist in your field.

Conclusion:

Provide closure to the analysis and include any recommendations evaluating these sources.

Use the information from the research as evidence to support your discussion. Set up as APA
<
style. Include terminology from Chapters 6 and 13 in your analysis. Include an appendix or
<
appendices to house your collected research. Use APA style format, including layout.
