This assignment, like the last one, is to state an idea or opinion and then support it, using explanations and examples. The major difference is that this paper will be five paragraphs. We’ll be working on writing expanded introductions and conclusions. Below are some MAPS considerations:
Mode: Five-Paragraph Theme
Introductory Paragraph: Start by broadly mentioning the topic and then narrow down to the specific opinion that you will be discussing; this is the thesis statement (the main idea or assertion).
Three Body Paragraphs: Each will start with a transition and then a support for your opinion. After that, you′ll explain what you mean and give at least one specific example. The transition and support statements are now called the topic sentences for each of the paragraphs.
Concluding Paragraph: The paper will end with your final comment on the subject. The conclusion should reiterate the topic sentence, and then it will broaden out to call for some action on the part of the reader or point out the importance of what you′ve said.
Audience: Consider the people you’re writing for. Do they know much about the issue? Do they already agree or disagree? Are they your age? How will you shape your argument to convince these specific people?
Purpose: Your overall purpose should be to convince the readers that your ideas are logical and well-supported. Beyond that, you may be trying to get them to agree with you, get them to take action on the subject, or something else.
Subject: Choose a different subject than the one that you chose for the previous major writing assignment. Again, make it something you’re interested in and know a lot about. You can choose from the list provided, or you can come up with something on your own, provided you run it by the instructor before starting to write.
