The goals of this assignment are to learn more about a student subpopulation or student-related issue of interest by identifying and reviewing relevant literature, professional resources, and other credible sources, and then to use them to create a concise (3-4 pp., plus title page & references) overview that defines the issues and identifies the needs related to the group or issue of interest.
As you begin to develop as a scholar, it’s important to hone your skills in using literature and other sources to learn what is known about a topic. For this assignment, you will identify a student subpopulation or sub-culture of interest (the same one you will focus on for the final project) and identify relevant literature (a minimum of 5 sources) published within the last six years. Most of your literature should come from scholarly journals; two pieces may be from a professional association (e.g., NASPA, ACPA, AAC&U), credible non-scholarly publication (e.g., Washington Post, Chronicle of Higher Education, Time), research institute (e.g., HERI, Pew Institute, Lumina Foundation), or other similar resources. You will need to identify a minimum of five articles/sources, read them, and organize/synthesize them into an overview of what they tell us in summary, using the individual articles to support your findings. As you look at the literature you found, what are the themes? What are the larger ideas that we should understand? Focus on describing and supporting those, rather than simply reporting out on the series of articles.
Your paper should be 6 pp. max, including title page & references – no abstract needed, but please pay attention to APA 7th edition format. You may use the same topic as you are using for work in Foundations if it fits the focus of this course/assignment.
Please not my topic of selection for my dissertation is around the impact of alcohol and drugs in fraternity and sorority life. In other words, focused on harm and risk reduction within fraternity and sorority life. I have attached a copy of my topic selection assignment submitted for another class earlier in the summer semester.
