Students,
The major assignment for this week is the Library Research Report. Based on past experience, I’ve learned that many students have a hard time with the Library Research Report, which is understandable because it’s a challenging assignment at this point in your academic lives.
You need to find at least four peer-reviewed, research-based articles accessed through the NU library databases–not just stuff you find through Google. If a website ends in .com, it is not a peer-reviewed source.
It’s important to read the instructions carefully. You need to answer the Who, What, How, and So What questions. The last one always causes some confusion. In terms of So What, what I’m looking for is a statement about how this source contributes to your understanding of your research topic/question. Think not just about what the source says–that’s the What question–but more what it does. Think in terms of active verbs. For example, does it help clarify a key issue in your research topic? Does it send you in a new direction? Does it reinforce or confirm a hunch you had? Does it cause you to rethink your whole project? Etc.
For the What question, you need to look closely at the research findings from your source. What did the researchers learn?
The articles must discuss research, rather than just opinions or news. It’s important that the authors actually did their own research, rather than just summarizing others’ research. Please look at the sample library research report. Pay close attention to the format–how it’s written–not just what it says. If you model your work on these examples, you should not go wrong.
That goes for all the major assignments–model your work after the samples. Let me know if you have any questions.
