1. Therapy Dogs International is devoted to regulating, evaluating, and registering therapy dogs to visit nursing homes. I chose Therapy Dogs International because I think dog therapy and this particular organization are beneficial. Hospitals and other facilities could benefit from therapy dogs. Our bodies tend to release serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin when they are among animals. According to UCLA Health, these hormones cause a relaxation and stress-reduction response. This hormone production can lessen depressive and depressing symptoms, promoting healthy mental health. According to research, having a pet or therapy animal nearby can assist a person in managing daily anxiety, moderate emotional arousal, and elevate mood. Therapy dogs may frequently calm down extreme emotions since they are taught to be attentive to a person’s needs and to show unconditional affection.

2. I chose the topic Coping with Disaster or Traumatic Event: Caring for Children in a Disaster, because of how close an potential disaster like that can hit so close to come being a mother of a 9 year-old. There are so many disasters going on in these days pertaining to the welfare of children, such as mass school shootings. Researching this topic seemed interesting and seemed like a topic worth learning given my parental status.
One thing to know when it comes to caring for a child in a disaster is, “ Children react, in part, on what they see from the adults around them. When parents and caregivers deal with a disaster calmly and confidently, they can provide the best support for their children” (CDC, 2020). Being a strong role model and displaying a controlled and collected response to a traumatic event will allow for the child to also mirror those same reactions. In addition, being able to discuss feelings and how to process emotions after a disaster will also help facilitate the emotions the child may be going through.
In every section of this article, it mentions to talk to the child—communication with children is such an important factor. I personally feel like being honest and talking to children about what is going on, what they are feeling, and just informing them on the situation is easier for them to cope with a disaster instead of hiding and keeping them hidden from events. If a child is isolated and showing signs of withdrawal or distress that should be a cause for concern, we are trying to avoid signs of PTSD and depression.
