Helpful Hints in Drafting Business Correspondence
Submit word documents or pdfs – no jpegs.
Look at the samples provided in the Modules on Canvas; these are very helpful.
Listen to the lecture prior to drafting, as it will highlight important criteria.
Refer to your peer review sheets; this tells you exactly what I will be looking for when grading your work product.
Please write in complete, coherent sentences.
Watch grammar and punctuation; this will be graded.
Watch slang and sarcasm; although I appreciate a good sense of humor, as it makes the night of grading go faster, there is not often room for this in business correspondence. Remember your audience, and no, it is not just me.
Ask questions; you cannot lose points for asking questions. Do not wait until you do not like your grade to ask me a question.
Possible Points:
Rough Drafts 5 points each for total possible of 25
Peer reviews 5 points each for total possible of 15
Final Drafts 10 points each for total possible of 60
Total Possible 100 points
BUSINESS CORRESPONDENCE GUIDELINES
Please adhere to the following in drafting the letters:
Please refer to the sample letters in Canvas; these samples tell you how many spaces are acceptable. These can be found in Project #1 Module, titled Full block and Modified block letter samples.
Margins should be 1 inch.
Letters and memos should be single spaced; all professional writing documents should be single spaced.
Use Times New Roman.
Do not indent paragraphs.
Use 12 font; that is standard, though 11 font can be acceptable if you are trying to fit all of the content on one page. Sometimes, that requires some manipulation of spacing and font size. That is okay.
Never have your closing on a 2nd page of a letter; it should be at the bottom of the first page, or carry the last paragraph to the top of the 2nd
All assigned letters should only need to be one page in length; the only exception may be the international letter, depending on culture and topic chosen.
Sign your final drafts.
The memo should be 1-2 pages in length.
