instructor and class,
As adolescents, they use several different strategies to help them fit in, humans have an instinct for social acceptance. Conformity is a strategy often used by individuals that feel out of place so they will seek out the company of others with similar interests such as a club or clique. Everyone wants a place to belong and people who accept them for themselves. The second strategy is physical attractiveness, using social media and Hollywood we have placed immense pressure on physical appearance. Society will use this as a gauge if you’ll be “popular” or not. There is a metaphorical box of standards and when you don’t meet those standards, you are bullied or ostracized for being different. When different age generations refer to popularity they often mean different things, Dolgin (2018) suggests that adults deem a person popular as someone who is well-liked, while adolescents define popularity as a socially dominant leader.
While I was in school, I went to a religious private school that was a part of the cult. The pressures of drug use, alcohol intake, and even the presence of large cliques. We all wore the same uniforms and were taught a specific curriculum that closely aligned with their teachings. I often used participation and achievement to feel confident in my group of friends. I was able to be a part of several sports teams and that allowed me to be involved in many events. I was able to use the small class size to allow me to succeed in class and graduate early. Although this is not the experience for everyone and the environment I was raised is very different from that of everyone else, it would significantly improve the middle school and high school experience if we removed some of the unnecessary pressures placed on our adolescents.

PEER 2 ood afternoon, classmates, and Professor Ryerson,
Middle school and Highschool can be a very difficult time for adolescents since there are so many social groups and cliques found within the social ecosystem of public schools. Dolgin goes over several strategies to help students blend into groups by using conformity, achievement, participation, physical attractiveness, deviance, and material possession (2018). While I was in high school, I used two of the listed techniques, achievement, and participation. For achievement, I chose to take AP 3D studio art in my junior year of high school when no other student in the school chose that class. I was the only student in the school taking that class that year. Being the only student taking that high caliber of a course during my junior year as opposed to most people who take AP studio art during their senior year after getting through three levels of 3D art courses shot me into relevance within the art community of my school because I was an underdog with no one to guide or bounce ideas from. I ended up receiving a 4 out of 5 on my portfolio when most of my AP 2D and Drawing studio art classmates received 3s with the occasional 4s. For the entire school year, I would always be walking around campus with big contraptions and maquettes of my works.
Another strategy that I implemented while in high school was participation, I joined four art clubs, the Photography club, Ceramics club, choir club, and Art honor society my sophomore year and because of my participation and dedication I became the vice-president in both the photography and ceramics club, the co-president of tech and equipment for choir, and officer for activities for the Art honor society by my junior year through my senior year, having all of these leadership positions within clubs allowed me to talk to more people and even host and give presentations for the art clubs whenever there was an event.

part 3
For your part 3 you will be writing a paper in APA format. (See details below.) Your paper should be approximately 4-5 pages or 1200 words. In your paper you will choose from one of the topics listed in Chapter 14: Adolescent Stress and Alienation or Chapter 15: Substance Abuse, Addiction, and Dependency. This will be a two-part paper. In part one, you will choose a topic and describe how it relates to adolescents.
In part two, you will choose a movie or book which portrays this issue through one or more of its characters. Compare the movie/book to your research. How well, does the movie/book compare to what you have learned in research about how these issues affect adolescents? Do you agree or disagree with the way the character’s issue , mental illness, issue, is portrayed when comparing the actual research that you have studied? Explain giving cited research. For instance, you may find errors in the movie or storyline based on your research, or you may notice that the story and issues presented seem to be too exaggerated or not very likely after presenting your research.
Here are some of the ideas for topics:
Runaways
Teen Depression
Suicide
Self-Injurious Behaviors
Eating Disorders
Juvenile Delinquency
Conduct Disorder, ODD
ADD, ADHD in adolescence
Juvenile Gangs
Drug Use and Abuse
Tobacco and Smoking
Alcohol and Excessive Drinking
Your completed paper will be due on Sunday night of week three at 11:59PM EST.
*Remember, we already know what the textbook says so you will want to do good research to find additional materials on this topic as it specifically relates to adolescents. Your textbook is fine as one resource but you will need at least 3 others for a total of 4 in addition to the text.
Your paper will analyze the topic presented in the text, Chapter 14. You will need to include and cover these important details about your topic:
In part one you need to cover this items: (Remember to include research and facts for each category).
I: Introduction-A proper definition/introduction of the adolescent problem, issue, that you will present.
Causes and symptoms (Examine the problem, list symptoms, discuss particular risk factors.
Nature or Nurture (Discuss whether it is hereditary, environmental, or both.)
Diagnosis or assessment (Discuss how the problem is recognized, diagnosed and/or assessed.)
Treatment (Options and prevention)
II. Movie or Book Title-
Describe a “short” paragraph about your movie and character.
Compare and contrast the topic and actual research, giving your critical review.
Conclusion-
Give your final statements and additional thoughts.Assignment Requirements (Use as a checklist):Use a 12 pt. Arial or Times New Roman Font
Double-space your paper
Minimum of 1200 words. (This will be about 4-5 pages.) Remember to include your word count.
Minimum of four (4) cited sources (one can be your text) using the parenthetical citations and the works cited page. Do NOT use Wikipedia as it is not considered to be a scholarly and reliable resource
Use APA format and parenthetical citations right after cited material
Make sure your name is on your paper
Include a title page and a works cited page (no abstract needed) & include word count
Paper should contain an introduction, a body, and a good conclusion
