Objectives for your writing skills
In this project, we′ll be combining all the skills we′ve been practicing. We′ll be addressing a clear purpose, writing with an audience in mind, and using an appropriate tone. Structure will of course be even more important here, given the depth and detail of our discussion. Also, our argument will require us to analyze and explain the many contributing factors of an issue, being fair to both sides, and carefully evaluating our sources and evidence, all in the effort to support our own stances.
Some context for your writing (an overview of your Purpose, Audience, and Tone)
The hypothetical SCCCD publication first focused on demonstrating students′ understanding of relevant issues. After that, it highlighted students′ ability to critically analyze content, breaking down the rhetoric in different texts and showing how an author′s decisions affect their impact on audiences. Now, the publication would like to give students the chance to share their voices on their chosen issues, to educate and persuade their fellow students and teachers about what should be done.
How you′ll do this more specifically (narrowing your Purpose, Audience, and Tone)
We′re now expanding on any previous research and discussions to create a research-based, persuasive argument. Since the audience is fairly broad, it′s also safe to assume that many of them might be inclined to disagree, at least at first.
Now, more than simply explaining any issues from a neutral position, we′ll be taking an overt stance on what we believe ought to be done about them. We will also have research to support our claims, along with careful explanations of that research. Of course, it will still be helpful to acknowledge the ideas of the opposition, but we will ultimately use them to strengthen our own positions.
Advice on topic choice: The topic is open, and it can be the same topic as Project 1, and I do encourage you to build on that previous research and the background knowledge you′ve developed, using any of the same sources that are relevant and helpful for your argument. If you decide to choose a new topic altogether, I generally recommend avoiding the very ″big″ issue debates (e.g. abortion, gun control, student debt forgiveness, etc.) as they are quite difficult to discuss with originality or creative perspectives. In other words, it′s hard to make it interesting for an audience already familiar with the arguments.
