The theory of attachment by John Bowlby provides valuable insight into the behaviors that nurses should stimulate in securing a strong attachment between parents and their children (Urban, 2020). Responsiveness to a child’s needs is an essential aspect that forms the foundation of a healthy attachment. A nurse should always emphasize the importance and need of parents being attuned to their infants’ needs and cues by paying key attention to their body language, facial expressions, and vocalizations (Thompson, 2021). Responding promptly to a child’s need, for instance, comforting them when they cry, is essential in establishing trust in the infant.
Positive reinforcement also significantly strengthens a child’s attachment to their parents (Fitzgerald, 2020). Therefore, nurses should educate parents about the power of positive reinforcement through praise and affection in shaping their infant’s behaviors. Creating a secure environment is another vital aspect of promoting healthy attachment (Thompson, 2021). The nurse should guide parents by informing them about establishing a consistent and stable relationship with their child. A stable relationship can be established by developing a consistent routine, providing children with emotional support and physical comfort. Infants are more likely to develop secure attachments and explore their surrounding when provided with a safe and protected environment.
Joint engagement is the other activity that works well in fostering attachment (Fitzgerald, 2020). Nurses can encourage parents to participate in joint engagement activities by playing, singing, and reading together. Through these activities, positive interactions are developed, and parent-child relationships are strengthened. Joint engagement activities also help parents learn about their children’s interests and preferences, enhancing their understanding of their needs (Thompson, 2021). Nurses can also help parents activate mindful observation, which involves attentively observing their child’s emotional cues and behaviors. Through this, parents become fully present, which helps them to recognize and respond to their children’s needs accurately. Mindful observation also helps parents to develop a deeper understanding of their children’s personalities and temperaments.
Emotional regulation is the other instrumental aspect in promoting attachment. Nurses can help parents to regulate their child’s emotional well-being by teaching them soothing techniques and comforting gestures, allowing them to handle their children’s needs accordingly (Thompson, 2021). Finally, empathy and reflective practices are fundamental to fostering a healthy attachment. Nurses should encourage parents to utilize reflective practices, ultimately empowering them to grow continuously in their journey through parenting (Urban, 2020). Generally, the attachment theory provides insights that parents can use in developing healthy attachments with their infants. Therefore, nurses have a crucial role in empowering parents with the information they need to support the development of healthy attachment bonds, essential for a child’s emotional development.

Role of Nurses in Promoting Healthy Attachments
This week student learning outcome was able to :Apply nursing theory or theories to nursing research.
The attachment theory developed by John Bowlby provides the intellectual framework for analyzing the importance of forming healthy relationships and bonds among individuals. According to Hornor (2019), human beings are innately wired with the capacity to form attachments. One of the essential relationships that humans first form is the parent/caregiver-child relationship. Children who can form healthy attachments with their caregivers in the first years of life typically have appropriate social and emotional development (Honor, 2019). Conversely, children unable to form secure attachments are at risk of impaired social and psychological functioning, which may have consequences extending into their adult lives. The parenting role is a novel life experience with unique challenges for each child-bearing experience. Thus, parents may require professional help from healthcare practitioners like nurses to help them form healthy attachments with their offspring. According to Ali et al. (2021), nurses play a crucial role in promoting child health by cooperating with families and parents. This discussion post explores the role of nurses in helping shape appropriate behaviors among parents to help promote healthy attachment.
One of the strategies that can be employed to help parents form healthy attachments with their children is encouraging collaboration. In this case, collaboration manifests itself in two-fold. First is the collaboration between the nurse and the parent; the other aspect is the collaboration between the nurse and other professionals. Forming strong collaborative partnerships with parents guarantees that parents have access to help whenever attachment issues or problems are identified. In contrast, linking parents with other professionals like child psychologists and social service workers can help ensure parents access mentors (psychologists) and extra assistance (from social services) when needed.
Another strategy nurses can employ when working with parents to help promote healthy attachment with their children is encouraging open communication. A nurse-parent relationship built on trust is essential in helping parents have the trust and confidence to express conflicted feelings concerning their parenting role. Taking up a new role can cause parents to experience uncertainty and apprehension, especially during the transition phase. It is imperative for nurses to encourage parents to voice such concerns, which may be hindering their ability to form healthy attachments. Lastly, providing psychosocial support is essential for facilitating caregiver-child attachment. Nurses should form the vanguard group providing education, guidance, and emotional support to parents to encourage healthy attachment. Such interventions can help alleviate stress and anxiety linked to parenthood and serve as a source of strength for parents.
