Term Project
Today many traditional leadership assumptions have been challenged as leaders are
struggling to make sense of the shifting environment and to learn how to lead the people
in their organizations effectively and successfully in the midst of turmoil. Followers, too,
have changing expectations of their leaders in terms of how they wanted to be managed.
In this class, we take a comprehensive approach to leadership by examining what leaders
need to do at the behavioral level and how they achieve organizational objectives.
This term project is designed to help you synthesize all the major concepts and
theories we learned in this class under a coherent framework so that a clear understanding
of leadership can be gained. Specifically, this project requires students to make a video
presentation and have it recorded and uploaded to Canvas for grading. The content of the
video should include two sections. This first part is an overview of key leadership
concepts. In this part, students are expected to address some questions about leadership.
These questions include: What is leadership? What characteristics or traits do they
generally possess? What makes leaders from non-leaders? What do leaders normally do
in order to achieve organizational goals? Do they think about business problems from a
different angle? What are some criteria we can use to evaluate the effectiveness of a
leader? These are some example questions you may choose to answer in the first few
slides.
The second part is a comprehensive analysis of a leader based on the framework
you provided in the first part. To do so, you need to describe a leader in detail. The leader
could be a famous person, a historic figure, a movie character, or someone you personally
know of. Remember, this person does not need to be a perfect leader. How well you
analyze this person based on your integrated leadership framework is the main point of
this term project. Please note that you need to provide enough detail about this person so
that instructor can evaluate if your analysis makes sense. Even if a widely recognized
person is chosen for the project, a thorough coverage of the person’s leadership
background is still expected.
In the analysis, how well the person compares against the parameters covered in
the first part need to be examined. What is the leadership style of this person? What
achievements has he/her accomplished? Is this person an effective leader in making

sound strategies? Is this person great at building good work relationships with
subordinates? Does this leader care about each individual in the team? Does this person
provide a solid work structure to the team? In the end, you should draw a conclusion as to
whether or not this person is an effective leader.
Requirement:
A 10-minute presentation with PowerPoint slides is expected. Depending on the software
you choose, a visual of the presenter is encouraged, but not required. Prepare a quiet and
well-lit location for recording.
There is a wide range of tools you can choose to record a video. My recommendation is
Canvas Studio, which can be found near the bottom of the navigation tabs in this course.
Microsoft Teams is also very user-friendly. As a JSU student, these two should come at
no cost to you. You can choose other tools as well. The default video maker in Microsoft
Windows is easy to use. A direct recording from your phone should also work.
The final product should be either a video file in a format playable in Canvas or a URL
link that directs to the page where the video is uploaded if a third-party video platform is
used. This needs to be done by the end of July 31st.
