In today’s technologically driven world, digital inclusion and broadband access have become critical factors that can significantly impact healthcare outcomes and should, in my opinion, undoubtedly be added as key areas to the social determinants of health. Digital inclusion refers to the equitable access and usage of digital technologies, while broadband access ensures that individuals have reliable and high-speed internet connections (Digital Inclusion, n.d.). By addressing these areas, we can bridge the digital divide and enhance healthcare equity, access, and delivery for all individuals, regardless of socioeconomic status or geographical location.
Access to EHRs and patient portals empowers patients to actively engage in their healthcare, access their medical information, and communicate with their healthcare providers (Upadhyay & Hu, 2022). However, without adequate digital inclusion and broadband access, vulnerable populations may face barriers to accessing these essential tools. Patients from underserved communities or rural areas may have limited internet connectivity or lack the digital literacy required to effectively use patient portals. By addressing digital inclusion, we can ensure that patients from all backgrounds can reap the benefits of EHRs and patient portals, leading to improved health literacy and more informed healthcare decision-making.
Mobile health and telemedicine have the potential to revolutionize healthcare accessibility and delivery as well. Mobile health applications allow patients to access healthcare information, engage in self-monitoring, and receive personalized health reminders directly on their smartphones (Ng et al., 2018). Telemedicine enables remote consultations and virtual healthcare services, breaking down geographical barriers and improving access to healthcare for those in rural or remote areas. However, without sufficient broadband access, these technologies become inaccessible to many individuals, exacerbating existing health disparities.
The social determinants of health encompass various factors that influence health outcomes, such as education, income, and housing. By integrating digital inclusion and broadband access as key components of SDOH, we recognize their significant impact on healthcare access and outcomes. Bridging the digital divide and providing equitable access to digital technologies will not only empower patients but also enable healthcare providers to deliver more patient-centered and efficient care.
