In this unit we will examine the evolution of science and the ways in which we acquire knowledge. We will discuss various research approaches and the different methods that are used to collect data.
Check out two mini lectures on “What is Science?” and “The Basics of Methods” to compliment Chapters 1 and 2.
Objectives
When you have successfully completed this unit you will be able to:
Explain how the scientific method can be used to overcome flaws and biases in our thinking.
Explain why understanding the scientific method is important for consumers of research.
Develop sound empirical research questions of Interest.
Explain the role of peer reviewed literature searches in evaluating research questions.
Discuss strategies for generating hypotheses, and the characteristics of good hypotheses.
Differentiate between independent and dependent variables, as well as their conceptual and operational differences.
Differentiate between experimental designs and non-experimental designs.
Describe the purpose of the research protocol when designing a study.
