Start by selecting a relevant news article, radio report, or TV report from the last 3 years. Indigenous issues are regularly reported in the mainstream news media, and you could find a report in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, National Post, MacLeans, Huffington Post, CBC News, APTN, among others. o Do not choose reports that deal with residential schools or Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIGW). You can choose any other event that addresses Indigenous issues. o Through this course we emphasize that Indigenous people and Indigenous nations are active agents in events, though this has not always been presented in the news or historical narratives. Through the course modules, we explore Indigenous resistance, resurgence, self-determination, and healing. Keep this in mind when choosing a topic and be sure to bring this into your research. • Work from the initial report and research other relevant information related to the topic including any background and historical events that you believe are important and helps us to understand the significance of this event or issue. In the paper you will want to: • Reference any of the five social forces that are relevant. • Discuss the news report’s importance/significance to Canadian and Indigenous peoples. • Explore how this event offers examples of Indigenous resistance, resurgence, self-determination, or healing. • Make sense of the material by discussing your own thoughts and reactions.
