Write an essay of 2-3 pages (no less than 2 FULL pages, no more than 3 pages) in response to the following topic. Your essay should be double-spaced, with one inch (1”) margins all around. Type your name, our course, and the date, and double-space down and begin. NOTE: Upload your essay as a word .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .pdf document. NO PAGES DOCS, NO GOOGLE DOCS, no text docs, and absolutely no typing into the ‘Comments’ window. Convert your docs to the proper format or the blackboard will not accept them.

ANSWER ONLY ONE (1) OF THE FOLLOWING:
1) Immigrating to the States: Diaz’s stories document life in the Dominican Republic (“Aguantando”) as contrasted with life in the United States (“Invierno”). In “Aguantando,” Yunior spent his childhood in the Dominican Republic with his mother and brother, but without his father. Then, in “Invierno,” he immigrates to New Jersey with his family, to join his father.
Discuss how these characters’ lives change once they immigrate from their homelands to the U.S. What are some of the changes must they undergo, and how does their environment change their characters, their personalities, the ways in which they live their lives and, most especially, their relationships with one another? Be specific, and use short textual references from the stories to support your arguments.
2) Gender Roles: What were the gender roles in DR when Yunior and Rafa and Mami lived there, without Papi, and how do they change once they arrive in the U.S.?
For example, some possible areas to explore might be:
-What was Mami’s role as a woman in the Dominican Republic, and how did that change once she arrived in New Jersey?
-How was Mami perceived by others, including her boys, in DR, as opposed to how she is perceived in New Jersey, both by Papi and by Yunior and Rafa?
-What were Papi’s, Yunior’s, and Rafa’s roles as males when Mami and the boys lived in DR, as compared with their roles now that they are in the states?
Use specific references from the stories to support your arguments.

1. DEMONSTRATE that you have read both of these stories. Do this by using specific textual references (short quotations) to support your arguments. If you write in general and abstract terms, and do not demonstrate that you have fully read and analyzed these texts, you cannot get credit for this assignment.
2. BE SPECIFIC. Do not summarize, but analyze. A summary is what happens; analysis is why it happens, and what it means? An argumentative, analytical essay develops a thesis with evidence. Evidence usually comes in the form of specific textual references, meaning that you must make arguments, and then support them with short quotations from the texts. Every main argument that you make should be supported by a short quotation from the texts.
3. Artificial Intelligence (AI): The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is strictly prohibited in all coursework and assignments. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of AI-generated text, speech, or images, as well as the use of AI tools or software such as Chabots (such as ChatGPT), Chegg, Story Generators, or any other resource to complete any portion of a project or assignment. FINALLY, some of you may have your own immigrations stories, and they may be similar to the ones depicted in these stories. However, while I am interested in your personal stories, and while they may be interesting to share on the Discussion Board, they are not appropriate for this essay assignment. This is a literature course, and your assignment is to write a critical essay on literature: it’s only about the stories…stick to the stories, and support your arguments with textual references from the stories.
