Does the media influence legislation? How and Why?

Please provide an example (or examples) of law, policy, or legislation that has been created due to media influence (Think how the news loops news stories of certain crime that may create public outcry). You may have to do a little research outside of your book for this but there are plenty of examples out there. This can be any type of media (not just the news).
