Below is a copy of the assignment requirements. For this work, use CLINT EASTWOOD as the topic. Disregard one of the sources being the text book from Belton, unless that is possible to include it. Thank you.
{The major focus of your paper should be to discuss the Star system in Hollywood. Using a current star (i.e. Natalie Portman, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Julia Roberts) or a “faded” star (i.e. Marilyn Monroe, James Stewart, Robert Redford, John Wayne, Cary Grant) as a case study, describe in detail the three levels of identity Belton discusses in his text. First, the “real” person, secondly, the “actor’s persona” and thirdly, the “star’s persona.”
A. At the beginning of your analysis discuss what you understand under the term “star system.” What does stardom in Hollywood entail? Explain what a star in Hollywood is all about by using references from at least Belton’s text and two more other sources (Different web sites count as additional sources). If you want to use more bibliographic resources to make your arguments, feel more than welcome.
B. Then, introduce the star you want to focus on. How is his or her stardom represented in the mass media. You may consult magazine profiles, advertisements, films, gossip items, or any other element or product of popular culture as supporting evidence. Some current stars also have websites that are available.
C. A suggestion is to collect pictures of the respective star. For your research paper it would be even more important to be familiar with several of “your” star’s films and try to detect what similarities or differences exist between the roles. The analysis of your star’s on-screen persona should be the major body of the paper.
“Clip pictures of the star and include them as part of your study. Analyze these photos: what impressions are they calculated to convey? Ask yourself how you know what you think you know about the real person. If you have seen the actor appear in several films, try to determine what similarities there are between his or her various roles.” (You may also try to watch several editions of a Hollywood “news” show such as Entertainment Tonight; try to determine how these shows construct and use star images).
D. At the end of the paper discuss the reasons for the star’s popularity. What, if anything, does the star say about American culture? (Leonardo DiCaprio’s success may have to do with the fantasy of the romantic American Dream where a penniless boy falls in love with
the rich and famous. Although the film ends tragically for him (he goes under), the narrative plot frames him as a romantic hero.)
Similar to your first research paper assignment you are asked to treat this paper as a scholarly product. You will have to make proper citations and be very detail oriented about your sources and resources. You should attach a bibliography to your paper.
Another tip: use the spell check in your computer before you hand in the paper!
Your paper must be typed and double-spaced. The length should be 4 to 6 pages. Please avoid unusual margins, spacing, and font sizes, and include page numbers so that I can reference comments. Also hand in a cover page with your name, title of the paper, course number.}
