As we become more familiar with the elements of music, we may come to see how they combine to help determine the element we call “form.” In the past few chapters, we’ve focused on forms that have been given specific names such as sonata form, theme and variation form, minuet and trio form, and others.
Choose any piece of music ( see below) that we have studied in the textbook, up to and including chapter 15 on Beethoven. Focus on this one element of music: form. If the form has a name, mention it. But the main point of the exercise is to describe the form. One way to do this is to show how it changes over time. What elements are manipulated as the piece moves through time? If there’s a B section, how does it contrast with the A section? If there’s a variation, what element is varied from the original instance? Does the texture change? What about the melody, or the harmony, or the rhythm? If the music has words, how do those connect to the form? You’ll find that all of the elements help us describe and define the form.
