Introduction

A vital component of the healthcare system, nursing’s future is crucial to enhancing both the health of individuals and entire communities. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” emphasizes the requirement for reforming nursing practice, education, and leadership. As a nurse, I share the IOM report’s recommendations for the future of nursing, and I intend to support this future in two ways.

Nursing’s Future: A Vision

My ideal scenario for nursing is a healthcare system in which nurses have the freedom to exercise all of their education and training. In addition to being fully included in the healthcare team, nurses should be leaders in promoting health and preventing disease. The special contributions that nurses make to patient care should be acknowledged, and their skills should be used as much as feasible.

The necessity to increase the role of nurses in the provision of healthcare is emphasized in the IOM report. Removing scope of practice restrictions, such as rules and regulations that prevent nurses from practicing to the full extent of their education and training, is one of the main recommendations. This suggestion is consistent with my vision for the future of nursing, in which nurses have the flexibility to exercise their professional judgment to the fullest extent possible and influence the improvement of health outcomes.

By 2020, the percentage of nurses who hold bachelor’s degrees should reach 80%, according to another significant proposal from the IOM report. This advice is essential to ensuring that nurses receive the training required to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. Bachelor’s degree-holding nurses are better qualified to deliver complex care, act as leaders in the healthcare industry, and have a broader knowledge base.

Steps to Promote the Vision in Action

I have two action plans to support my vision for the future of nursing. I will first fight for legislation that eliminates restrictions on the scope of practice so that nurses can exercise their profession to the fullest potential of their education and training. Supporting legislative initiatives to increase the role of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in the provision of healthcare, such as enabling them to prescribe prescriptions or work independently, is one example of how to do this. Nurses can contribute more productively to the healthcare team and enhance patient outcomes by removing these obstacles.

Second, I want to motivate nurses to get a bachelor’s or master’s degree or other higher training. This can involve advocating the importance of higher education in the nursing profession as well as offering mentorship and assistance to nurses who desire to further their education. We can make sure that nurses have the knowledge and abilities to deliver high-quality care and drive innovation in the healthcare system by increasing the percentage of nurses with advanced degrees.

For people’s health and well-being as well as the well-being of communities, nursing’s future is crucial. As a nurse, I share the IOM report’s recommendations for the future of nursing, and I intend to take steps to advance this vision.
