Topic: The Rise of South Korean Pop Culture – did Hallyu take over the World?

South Korean pop culture, also referred to as “Hallyu” or the “Korean Wave,” has become incredibly popular all over the world in the last ten years. The Hallyu tsunami has engulfed global audiences, cutting through linguistic and cultural borders with music, dramas, food, and beauty. In this essay, I want to look into the factors that have contributed to the growth of South Korean popular culture and see if Hallyu has taken over the world.
Body: Hallyu’s Ascent
Since the 1990s, when the government relaxed its censorship regulations and instituted neoliberal reforms to foster the growth of the private sector, South Korea’s entertainment business has been expanding quickly. The export of Korean dramas to China and other Southeast Asian nations in the early 2000s marked the start of the Korean Wave.
