DRAFT OF COMMERCIAL SUMMARY AND INTRO TO THE PROFESSOR
Submit the draft of your commercial summary and the intro to your media paper here for me to comment on.Your summary and introduction should be 1.5 to 2 pages long in correct MLA format. Be sure you include a Works Cited with the commercial cited (see below for how to cite your commercial). Here is the outline for the summary and introduction:Open with a summary of the commercial (refer to the handout Ten Tips for a Successful Media Analysis for a summary example of the Doritos ad).Start with the name of the commercial and the brand. Use terms like opens with, begins with, or starts with.
Use transition words throughout like in the next scene, later, or after.
Just tell the story of the ad in the order it happens. Don’t try to jump around or tell it out of order.
Explain the action of the commercial for someone who has never seen it before.
Use descriptive adjectives to describe the commercial.
Don’t use too much detail. Your description of the ad should be no longer than one page total. You don’t need to share every detail especially if you are not going to analyze that information.
End your summary with a citation that is the brand name like this (Doritos).
The second paragraph should be the introduction
Include the following information in your intro. It does not have to be in this order, but you need to include all of these parts (for help, review the example paper in the folder at the top of the unit labeled Essay #1 Media Paper Instructions and Learning Material)Introduce something about media and culture and how they affect or influence each other and society
Your topic (the stereotype or value you discovered in your analysis)
The consequences of reinforcing those myths or values (the implicaitons section of your paper)
introduce the commercial or brand
The target audience (who is the commercial talking to? White middle class Americans, Black Americans, women, men?)
End with your thesis (The commercial “Name of Ad” by Brand Name [signal verb like reinforces, promotes] [your claim].
Finally, you need a Works Cited page. Here is the formula for a Works Cited for an advertisement found on YouTube. If you didn’t use YouTube, just replace the word YouTube with the name of the website where you found the ad. Be sure you include the word Advertiesment to express that this is an advertisement and not just a video.Brand Name. Advertisement. “Title of Commercial.” Uploaded by Name, YouTube, Date Published, URL.
Please submit your draft by 11:59 PM and wait for your response. The response time will depend on the amount of plagiarism in your paper as well as the amount of users submitting at the same time. Check your report for plagiarism. You need to check and remove all plagiarism (or correctly cite it) BEFORE submitting your final draft.Plagiarism includes failing to cite a direct quote with quotation marks and an in-text citation, borrowing someone else’s work without a correct citation, bad paraphrasing (Safe Assign will not identify a good or fair paraphrase), or turning in the same paper to two different classes. You may ONLY submit your paper in the following formats: .doc or .docxSafe Assign will not accept any other format.

DRAFT OF THREE PARAGRAPHS OF ANALYSIS TO THE PROFESSORSubmit your three paragraphs of analysis for your media paper for me to comment on.
The three paragraphs of analysis for the media paper are part of the paper where you prove that the commercial promotes the myths, values, or beliefs you found when you analyzed it. This part is just analyzing the ad. You are only pointing out the myths, values, or beliefs that you have found in the ad. Do NOT include any consequences for those values or beliefs as those belong in the next section. These paragraphs are the heart of your paper. They are the most important parts, so spend some time thinking and then writing about your ad.
If you have not already, please review my comments to you on the discussion board over your commercial and your summary and introduction. If you were not on the right path, I pointed it out in both places. Be sure to review them to make sure you are focused in the right direction.
The three analysis paragraphs need to be between 1.5 and 2 pages in correct MLA format with a Works Cited.
Analyze the ad (you need about 3 paragraphs):Start with a claim about the commercial that supports your thesis. For example, “Victoria’s Secret promotes thinness as an ideal for women to achieve.” OR “Doritos reinforces that it is acceptable to lie in a marriage.”
Provide evidence and examples from the ad (actions, plot, quotes, descriptions).
Explain and analyze: What does it mean? So what? Who cares? Why does it matter? Do not bring in the consequences here. Just focus on your topic sentence. How does this affect the target audience? What does it tell them about how to behave or what is acceptable. Focus on the target audience when you are analyzing.
Introduce a second example from the commercial. You can literally say “Another example is when….”
Explain and analyze like the first example.
Continue until you have introduced all of your examples and details from the commercial that prove your topic sentence and claim.
Refer to your thesis, your big idea.
Please submit your draft by 11:59 PM and wait for your response. The response time will depend on the amount of plagiarism in your paper as well as the amount of users submitting at the same time. Check your report for plagiarism. You need to check and remove all plagiarism (or correctly cite it) BEFORE submitting your final draft. Plagiarism includes failing to cite a direct quote with quotation marks and an in-text citation, borrowing someone else’s work without a correct citation, bad paraphrasing (Safe Assign will not identify a good or fair paraphrase), or turning in the same paper to two different classes.
You may ONLY submit your paper in the following formats: .doc or .docx

DRAFT OF IMPLICATIONS AND CONCLUSION TO THE PROFESSORSubmit your two paragraphs of implications and your conclusion here for me to comment on.
Here is the outline for these final three paragraphs. After you write these, we will be almost finished with this unit. All you will have left is to revise them based on my feeback and then submit the final draft. Don’t forget that the final is worth 25% of your total grade in this class, so be sure you revise, revise, revise!
Discuss the implications of your findings, i.e. the consequences (you need two paragraphs, one for each source):Start with a claim about how your myth or belief affects society, i.e. When women are told they must be thin to be acceptable, it can cause eating disorders. OR When men are taught that lying in a relationship is acceptable, it can ultimately cause the marriage to fail and end in divorce.
Prove it with evidence from one of your sources and relate it to the commercial. Introduce the authors with their credibility and then quote or paraphrase their research/study/evidence.
Explain and analyze: So what? Who cares? Why does it matter? What does it mean? How does this affect real people? Again, connect your discussion back to the commercial before you end every paragraph. Where do you see this in the ad? How does the ad affect (or hurt) people?
Refer back to thesis
Conclusion (choose one). You can use I statements in the conclusion:Explain the significance of the problem
OR make a call to action
OR offer a solution
OR present a personal experience and share your feelings about the issue
Be sure you refer to the commercial before you end your paper. You are writing a media analysis of a commercial. You have to connect it all together!
