175.101 S1, 2023 – assignment 1
Questions – ANSWER ALL THREE
1) Drawing on BOTH readings from Week One choose TWO approaches from the six dominant approaches to the scientific study of psychology (biological, evolutionary, psychodynamic, behavioural, cognitive, and humanistic). You may include key historical figures and salient aspects of their theories, models, or frameworks to demonstrate your understanding of these two schools of thought and their salient differences. (3 marks) In other words:
• Discuss at least THREE core ideas or salient tenets of your first approach to demonstrate your understanding of the different approaches and their contributions to the field of psychology. (1.5 marks)
• Discuss at least THREE core ideas or salient tenets of your second approach to demonstrate your understanding of the different approaches and their contributions to the field of psychology. (1.5 marks)
2) Drawing on BOTH readings for Week One, demonstrate your understanding of socio- cultural approaches in psychology. (3 marks) Your answer should address the following three parts:
• Define what is meant by the social and cultural approach to psychology in your own words. (0.5 marks)
• Discuss why it is important for psychologists and psychology as a discipline to consider individual characteristics and cultural assumptions when working/researching with individuals from Western and other cultures.(1.5 marks)
• Use examples from the readings and your own life to demonstrate your understanding. (1 mark)
3) Drawing on Week One readings and one other source introduce an area of psychology that interests you to work in or research. (2.5 marks)
• Define the area of psychology that interests you to work in (e.g. forensic psychology), or a specific topic you would like to research (e.g. brain activation during the experience of prejudice) in your own words. (0.5 marks)
2
175.101 S1, 2023 – assignment 1
• Elaborate regarding the type of work/research you would do, the people involved, who it would benefit etc. (1 mark)
• Discuss the level of explanation (as outline in your readings) that you would be taking in conducting this work/research, noting why this level is well suited. (1 mark)
4) References (1.5 marks)
• Accurately use the TWO CORE readings as references in your answers (in-text references) in all three questions, in addition to extra materials you source, for example in question three. You must format your citations according to APA 7th format. (1 mark)
• Include a reference list of the TWO core readings in APA 7th format, in addition to any additional sources you obtained.
Assignment One, checklist
• Insert your name and student ID into a header at the top of your page so it is visible on each page.
• Use double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman (or similar font).
• Use complete sentences when writing this assignment. This means using prose and
avoiding bullet points and incomplete sentences.
• Demonstrate your understanding by drawing on multiple sources of information and
paraphrasing ideas. Paraphrasing means putting someone else’s ideas into your own words. Each time you do this, give credit to whose ideas you have used by inserting an in-text citation.
• Spell check your work. It is a poor reflection on your attention to psychological theories, frameworks etc, if you misspell names or salient concepts!
• Provide a reference list at the end of your assignment. Start this on a new page with the heading ‘References’ in the centre of the page. Ensure you follow APA 7th guidelines including:
• the use of hanging indents. This means after the first line of a reference the additional lines of that reference are moved a few spaces to the right.
• Ensure entries are in alphabetical order. 3
175.101 S1, 2023 – assignment 1
• Ensure you have used the right format for each reference (books, journals, etc are formatted differently).
• Note where the commas, full stops, brackets etc are needed. Punctuation is not arbitrary in a reference list! Each type of source has its own requirement.
• If in doubt, go to https://owll.massey.ac.nz/referencing/apa-interactive.php where you will find all of the examples you need to ensure accurate in-text citations and reference list.
