In this assignment, students will select a CURRENT macro social issue, and juxtapose this issue with a news article (print media, online media acceptable) any other informational source to complete a critical analysis of the respective issue and its implications for macro social work practice. You must describe the issue, its impacts, and relevance to social work practice. This assignment should demonstrate a synthesis of the course content from the first three weeks of material. Some guiding questions to consider include:
• What is the issue? What groups of people are most affected and how?
• What is the connection to the larger socio-structural context (e.g. globalization, nations, corporations, etc.)?
• How is systemic power and power differentials manifested in the issue and how is this connected to social work practice?
• What is your potential role as a social worker from a macro standpoint in resolution of the issue?
• What are systemic obstacles for resolution?
• What are strengths of populations impacted?
• Discuss three possibilities for resolution.
The assignment should reflect theories and terms discussed in the class and readings.
