The Department of Homeland Security was established by the U.S. government in response to the threat of terrorism against the country in the hopes of encouraging cooperation among federal, state, and local law enforcement, intelligence, and immigration agencies in order to share information and develop coordinated efforts to thwart terrorist threats or respond to terrorist attacks.
Many senators and representatives in the U.S. Congress have considered merging all of the nation’s police agencies into a single national police organization in light of the current terrorism threat. The three levels of government police would no longer be chaotic thanks to the centralization of power, which would also establish a uniform, unambiguous standard for how to combat both terrorism and crime more generally.
