Typed detailed notes from your observations. Please take notes on everything you see or hear. Each hour of observation should have at least 1 single spaced typed notes.
Two or more strengths that you observe in the community, and 2 or more areas of unmet need/areas in need of policy change.
Some ways to complete observations:
Windshield survey – from a car or public transportation
Walking
Observing from one or more place
Take video/pictures – discreetly
Make observations at different times of the day/week
If there are different areas in the community (business district vs residential) try to make observations of each area
Some types of information to seek from your observations:
Information about the demographics, geographic/environmental, economic, social and political characteristics of the community
Information about public resources, infrastructure, and institutions
Information about unmet needs and service gaps
Information about strengths and resources within the community
Information about competing interests in the community
Information about the history and evolution of the community
Information about recent or upcoming initiatives that may impact the community
