Children’s Book and Paper
Due: Sunday, 1/15 by 11:59 pm
For this assignment, you will create a children’s storybook and write a paper about it. The book should
be designed to address a problem, occurrence, or common routine in the life of young children, and you
should specifically focus on one area of development within that context. This assignment is an
important part of your learning experience. It is an opportunity to apply course content in a meaningful
way. Try to have fun with it!
Think about what is happening in children’s lives during the infant and toddler years –
Perhaps common fears at that age (e.g., sleeping alone at night, going to the dentist, imaginary
monsters, stranger anxiety, separation anxiety), difficult experiences (e.g., moving to a new place,
divorce, death, or parental illness), getting along with other children (e.g., hitting, biting, sharing toys),
fighting with siblings or sharing a room, experiencing something new (e.g., going to a friend’s birthday
party, learning to ride a bike, potty training), etc. The options are endless. It may help to ask
family/friends about your childhood experiences, leaf through children’s books, or perhaps watch some
Sesame Street clips. Whatever you choose, you must focus on one developmental domain (i.e.,
physical, cognitive, or socioemotional) and one common problem, occurrence, or everyday routine.
Examples: A book about lying designed for a toddler from a cognitive perspective would have to
consider their lack of a theory of mind. A story about the fear of starting preschool might consider what
is going on with attachment processes at that age (socioemotional). It doesn’t have to be a big thing – for
instance, you might focus on toothbrushing, eating vegetables, or using the potty. However, you must
choose one developmental domain to focus on.
In addition to your book, you must submit a separate paper describing the “why” behind your book
design. Give the intended age range for your story and discuss what is going on in the domain of
psychology you are addressing at that age. See the attached prompt for more details.
Instructions
Book

 Your book must be designed to address one problem, occurrence, or everyday routine in the life
of young children.
 Your book must focus on one developmental domain (i.e., physical, cognitive, or
socioemotional).
 Write a storybook at least 12 pages long (not including the front and back covers).
 Your book should not be written as an informational pamphlet. It should have a storyline –
imagine you are reading the book to a child!
 Each page must have written content and graphics.
 You do not need to illustrate yourself. You can provide graphics, including photographs you have
taken yourself, clip art, drawings, or any other graphics you can legally use. You may use a
PowerPoint presentation or an online editing program to submit the book. I do not accept
google docs.
▪ A great website is www.mystorybook.com. It is straightforward to use, free, and you can
make and download one book at no charge. When you finish creating your storybook,
you must make it public for me to view. Click “Done Editing” on the top right corner.
Next, you will see “Sharing,” and you must toggle over to make it “Public.” There is no
reason to pay for your storybook – it is free!
▪ Important note: If you submit a link to your book and it is not published, I will not be able
to view it. Therefore, I will only grade your paper. Books not published at the time of
submission and during grading will receive a 0.
 Submit your book at the same time you submit your paper. Attach the file or provide a
shareable link in the Canvas submission comments.
Paper

 Submit a paper describing your children’s book. Discuss the problem, occurrence, or routine and
how it relates to one developmental domain (i.e., physical, socioemotional, or cognitive). See
attached rubric.
▪ Example: If, for instance, you were to write a story for toddlers about the death of a
beloved pet, you might want to use an article that discusses the developmental
progression in the understanding of death and how in toddlers, death is viewed much as
separation is. You would need to consider the implications of the story you tell and
consider children’s capacity for understanding death.
 Your paper must be written in APA style: 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with
1-inch margins. Include an APA-style title page, in-text citations, and a reference sheet.
 Do not include an abstract.
 Do not use informal language. First-person language should only be for your conclusion
paragraph if needed.
 Your writing should be comprehensible and clear – proofread for spelling errors and grammar. It
should also present a clear progression of ideas and include the necessary elements of good
writing. Egregious writing errors will result in a deduction of points from your overall grade for
the assignment.
 No quotes. Paraphrase the content in your own words. Quote content will not count toward the
page requirement or your paper grade.
 Plagiarism or academic dishonesty in any form will be an automatic zero and reported to the
college.
 Utilize a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed research articles. Do not select book chapters, meta-
analyses, popular media, opinion pieces, news sources, or websites like Wikipedia and
Dictionary.com. You can use reputable websites, books, and videos, but they do not count
toward the minimum peer-reviewed article requirement. Your references should be relatively
recent (within the last five years). If you need instructions on searching for peer-reviewed
articles, review the video in the paper module.
 Page requirement is 2-2.5 pages of content (not including the title page or reference sheet).
Points will be deducted if not required length. Content will not be graded past 2.5 pages. It is
important to write clearly and succinctly. In other words, choose your words deliberately and
precisely, constructing your sentences carefully to eliminate “fillers.”
 Your paper must be submitted to Canvas as a Word document (.doc or .docx). Papers submitted
in any other format will not be graded. Currently, enrolled students have free access to
Microsoft 365. Please save the document to your desktop and attach the saved file to your
submission. I do not accept google docs or any links.
 You only have one attempt to submit this assignment in its entirety. That means your book and
paper must be submitted at the same time. No additional submissions will be accepted. Be sure
to attach the correct documents.
 The deadline is Sunday, 1/15, by 11:59 pm on Canvas. The system will not allow you to submit
past the deadline. Late papers/books, hard copies, emailed copies, copies left in my mailbox, or
papers not uploaded as Word document will not be accepted or graded. No exceptions.
 Keep a copy of your assignment on file until you receive your final grade.

Tips: Reading an Article
Read, re-read, and mentally digest it until you have a conversational understanding of the
paper. You don’t know what you know until you can talk about it. And if you can’t talk about it,
you won’t be able to write about it.
Read selectively. Don’t start by reading the articles from beginning to end. First, read the
abstract to get an overview of the study.
Scan the article to identify the answers to these “Why-What-What-What” questions:
1. Why did they do the study? Why does it matter?
2. What did they do?
3. What did they find?
4. What does it mean?
The previous four questions correspond to these parts of a research article:
1. Introduction: the research question and hypotheses
2. Methods
3. Results
4. Discussion
Create a summary sheet of each article’s key points. This will help you to integrate each article.
Read for depth. After you understand an article’s main points, read each section in detail to
gain the necessary in-depth understanding to compare the work of different researchers.
