What you need to do: A Topic Selection Statement (approximately 1/2 page) and Bibliography (approximately 1 page). In the statement, you will describe briefly the region and topic selection.
This research paper requires you to compose a case history report of a particular region of your
choice. Students should choose a region in which a natural catastrophe has occurred. Then, they should
apply knowledge for
any
of the chapters we have been covering through the course. For example,
you may choose the state of California to conduct research that pertains to volcanoes (Chapters 6
& 7), earthquakes (Chapter 3) and plate tectonics (Chapter 2), or tsounamis (Chapter 5), landslides
(chapter 8), etc.
You may choose from one up to three topics (as long as the topics are
interrelated).
Expectations include:
•
the
demonstration of appropriate use of course material and other sources,
•
demonstration of conceptual
understanding beyond what was covered in the class lectures
and the required reading,
•
and a
facility with the technical and stylistic expectations of college-level writing.
Structure of the Research Paper
–
Introduction (2.5 points)
a.
Brief description of the region you chose.
b.
Research objectives: an explanation of the topics you intend to cover (
up to three).
-The Main Core of the paper (15 points)
This is the central section of the paper where you provide sufficient information of the natural
disaster event(s), and references from other scholars to defend your research. Example – Evidence 1
Example – Evidence 2
Example – Evidence 3 Etc.
-Conclusion (2.5 points)
This is the part where you summarize your paper and present your conclusions.
-Bibliography
The section where you display all of scholarly work you have used in your essay. You should
include at least
five (5) external references
(other books, journal articles, interviews, etc.) to
support your research. This section is NOT included in the word count.
Format and Style: 1500-1800 words (5-7 pages), double-spaced, with heading and title, Times New
Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins. Word format only. I recommend using MLA style for all of the in-text quotations.
