Tell me what you think is last week’s single most SIGNIFICANT current events story and why you believe it deserves that designation. It MUST cover the following three areas/issues. Bottom line: A few sentences aren’t going to be adequate.
1) WHAT HAPPENED? The Who, What, Where, When, and (to the degree it is known) Why/How aspects of the story you choose. You should be able to address this in one paragraph. In this, I am looking for you to let me know that you understand the story and what happened.
2) WHY IS IT THE MOST SIGNIFICANT STORY? There is really NO wrong answer here, but let me know your thought process. DO present critical thinking skills in this. You can think about our newsworthiness criteria here. What is the impact? What is the controversy? What sets it apart as unusual? (Other criteria?) Etc.
3) HOW DO YOU RATE THE JOB THAT THE MEDIA ARE DOING IN COVERING THIS STORY? This MAY be the most important element. I’m NOT asking whether you thought the event was a good thing or a bad thing. I’m NOT asking whether you like the players involved. I’m not asking whether you agree or disagree with the actions taken. I am asking you to step back and give an “objective” (OK, balanced, fair, and accurate) analysis of the news media. Is the coverage you have seen accurate? Is the coverage balanced or biased? Is the news media being informative, or is it furthering a particular agenda? How could it be/have been better? What is your net learning as an aspiring journalist or communications professional after observing and analyzing this coverage? What “GRADE” would you give the news media on this story?
