Part one:
In a first thoughtful paragraph, consider “Together With All Creatures,” a document that comes from the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, which operates Concordia Saint Paul. The document asserts our common creatureliness and our distinctive creatureliness. In your first paragraph, identify at least three elements of the Christian story that lead Lutherans to assert a commonality with all creatures. Based on this and your Scripture reading for Module 6, how should we think about and approach our care for the earth?
In a second paragraph, consider “Faith Active in Love.” This document attempts to address the misconception that the church is or should be only concerned about spiritual matters. Instead, it calls for direct and intentional action on the part of the church to address the physical needs of people and the world. After you read the document, focus again on pages 18 to 23. These pages seek to find in the New Testament and church history a basis for intentional action by the church to care for the physical needs of others—i.e., faith active in love. Choose two of the examples cited and explain why you think they are particularly persuasive in calling for faith to be active in love.
Part two:
Module 6 has been largely about our place within creation. In thread 1, you discussed how and why we care for the earth. In this thread, I want you to consider that our bodies are a part of that same created order. Discuss in what ways our vocations within our families – child, spouse, parent, etc. – give us the opportunity to fulfill our call to care for creation through love. Be specific and concrete in your discussion, interacting not only with the text of God at Work but also the Scriptures (you might consider especially the Scripture passages that Veith uses in chapter six).
Part three:
The title of Chapter 6 in Veith’s, God at Work, is “Your Calling in the Family.” How does this chapter help give understanding for the biblical Christian view of sex within marriage only, protecting the life of the baby in the womb, husband and wife and parent and child relationship? Additionally, how does this chapter highlight the destructiveness and self-centeredness of our society today?
