Discussion – Why Save Endangered Languages?
This week we learned about the process of language
loss and the various attempts that have been made to
revitalize languages on the brink of extinction. Why do
people, such as Jews of the diaspora discussed in
lecture or the Wampanoag, feel that it is important to
save their languages? How successful are these
attempts? In what ways has the spread of colonial
and/or world languages such as English contributed to
language loss? Are you optimistic or pessimistic about
the long-term prospects of language revitalization, and why should we care?
