The purpose of this project is to examine your
grasp of various attempts to handle the problem of knowing mind-independent
reality. DO have
fun with the project, but DON’T treat it as something to throw together
haphazardly and at the last minute. Your work will be judged on the clarity,
the care, and the competence with which you apply what you’ve learned. The
length of what you write is not nearly as important as its quality; but be
advised that clarity and careful presentation often require that you say more
rather than less, while also avoiding irrelevance and incoherence.
Frist, read the following
in attached textbook:
·
READ: René Descartes,
“Meditation I: What Can Be Called Into Doubt,” pp. 264-267 (4 pages)
·
READ: David Hume, “Of
Scepticism with Regard to the Senses,” pp. 269-276 (8 pages)
·
READ G. E. Moore, “Proof of an External World,” pp.
278-283 (6 pages)
·
READ: Jonathan Vogel, “Skepticism and Inference to the Best
Explanation,” pp. 284-291 (8 pages)
Then, read the two
shortened chapters from The Problems of Philosophy, by Bertrand Russell.
Instructions:
create your discussion document, referring to
the appropriate portions of the Russell chapters by use of the marginal numbers
in those chapters. Discuss the relation between the pieces from four
philosophers and the two chapters from Russell.
