Mang-Health care system awareness of child abuse is increasing. Child abuse can be spotted through the guardian’s actions toward the child. Child abuse is also spotted during a doctor’s visit. “Child abuse and neglect is a preventable public health problem There are many factors that have been known to put children and families at risk for abuse and neglect, such as high unemployment rates, familiarity and comfort caring for common developmental milestones and parent/caregivers experience with trauma, among others. There are also numerous protective factors that can prevent child abuse and neglect, such as safe and stable housing, positive community relationship, access to medical and mental health services, emotional support, among others” Prevention of child abuse and neglect. Home. (n.d.).
Child abuse in the health care system can provide resources for the patients and the children. The health care ability to reach out to the agent and resources is a few different benefits for the health care and the child. The resources provide to strengthen families, support parenting, and the relationship between the child and their guardians.

Jessica-Healthcare professionals are required to report all cases of abuse. The challenge is identifying the abuse and validating the abuse. In 2020, the pandemic created a paradigm shift in how people lived their lives and where they spent their time. In 2020 the National Child Abuse Hotline reported their calls were up 30% from 2019. Hospitals reported that their overall pediatric visits decreased, but their abuse visit increased. It is important for healthcare professionals to be aware of the signs of abuse so that they can effectively identify and protect these children. One of the symptoms they should watch for is bruising. Bruising over non-bony prominences and bruises in multiple stages of healing should trigger the healthcare professional. It is key to be aware of the easily missed signs of abuse and to be vigilant. Evermore so now with increased telemedicine visits, masks, and social distancing, it creates more chances for the abuse to be missed. If abuse is suspected, the healthcare professional must report it. The child should be taken to an emergency room for evaluation. From there the child will be examined and the other service lines will be contacted. While an accusation is a serious matter, it must be reported to protect the safety of every child.
