Internet memes have become a language all their own in recent years. The defining characteristic of a meme is that the image can be remixed—new words can be layered on top of it. However, the uses have generally become standardized: Condescending Willy Wonka is always condescending, Scumbag Steve is never chipper and gentlemanly, and Distracted Boyfriend is always distracted.
For this assignment, you are going to create a taxonomy (classification scheme) for a set of internet memes. Here’s how you will go about it:
Choose at least ten internet memes or image macros
Briefly describe each one (a sentence or two)
Give the context/use in which you find the image—reaction, sarcasm, argument, etc. How is it used?
Identify the rhetorical device used—logos, ethos, pathos
Divide the memes into at least three categories (each category must have at least two memes); you may not name your category any variation of “Other”
Write a paragraph detailing your rationale for the categories you chose
Write a brief sentence explaining why each meme is in the category you assigned
