According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities and the guide, Forward Together, A School Leader’s Guide to Creating Inclusive Schools, developing an inclusive school culture is multifaceted. It empowers teachers to recognize the importance of including students’ cultural references in all aspects of learning and ensures teachers design differentiated learning experiences in flexible ways to meet the needs of individual learners. This includes flexible grouping and small-group instruction according to students’ needs and strengths. Finally, an inclusive school culture utilizes positive behavior strategies including clear expectations for student behavior, staff modeling the behavior they want to see in students, and teachers that help students build skills to communicate and manage their emotions and needs.
