1. Discuss Slavery in pre-Civil War America. Why did it become more prevalent in the South than the
North? What social/legal/religious justifications did Southerner’s use to maintain the practice of owning
humans as property? How did Slavery shape pre-Civil War American politics?
2. Discuss Farm/Rural life 1830-1860 – What would an average day, week, and growing season entail in
your life? Be as descriptive as possible but feel free to elaborate and “pretend” you were there. Try to
cover all of farm/rural life – from the work, leisure, social activities – what dangers were there, if any?
