The purpose of this activity is to:
Familiarize the student to linear systems
Familiarize the student to the slope-intercept form of a line
Have the student describe the meaning of a positive/negative slope
Have the student describe the meaning of the y-axis intercept
Familiarize the student to graphing software to illustrate data and equations
Instructions-
Create and describe a situation that changes with a constant rate and can be modeled using a linear equation (constant velocity, cell phone bill, paycheck by the hour, withdrawing a constant amount of money each month from a bank account). Define the variables, include the units.
Write an equation that models your situation using your variables with the correct units. Then write your equation in “y=mx+b” form.
Give at least 3 data points that exist on your line. Plot the data points and graph the line. Correctly label the axis of your graph. (You are encouraged to use desmos, excel or google sheets).
Describe your line. Calculate the slope. (Does it have a positive or negative slope? Why? Does the graph of the line pass through the origin? Why or why not?). What does the slope of your line represent? What are the units associated with your slope?
Use your equation to create an example problem/question from your linear system (how long will it take to travel 250 miles? How many hours will I have to work to earn $500, How many months will it take until there is under $100 left in the account?). Solve the problem and show your work.
