Prompt 1: Explain in detail the different types of dementia.
There are two types of dementia:
1) Alzheimer’s Disease
This is a neurodegenerative disease that slowly destroys brain cells and severely damages the brain’s ability to think and recall (Banasik & Copstead, 2018). In the end stages of the disease, the ability to do simple tasks will be extremely diminished. A buildup of abnormal clumps (amyloid plaques) is also seen in affected patients (Figure 1). There are three different categories of the disease: mild, moderate, and severe. With mild Alzheimer’s disease, patients are already having difficulty in recall and experience a decline in cognitive ability. With a moderate case of Alzheimer’s, patients are starting to experience difficulty in language, reasoning skills, and a progressive decline in memory recall to the point of not recognizing family members. In severe Alzheimer’s disease, patients are completely dependent on caregivers and can no longer communicate their needs.
2) Vascular Dementia
This is the same type of dementia that the patient, Rowena, was diagnosed with. This type of dementia is often a consequence of stroke or other symptoms that block blood flow to the brain. Patients have trouble reasoning, speaking, and normal recall. Usually, patients with vascular dementia can also have other symptoms such as paralysis on side of the face, mobility difficulties, and confusion (Alzheimer’s Association, n.d.).
3) Lewy Body
One in ten people with dementia has a Lewy body type (Alzheimer’s Association, n.d.). This is a type of dementia that accumulates a large number of Lewy body proteins in the brain. As a result of this accumulation, patients tend to experience muscle stiffness, shuffling walk, and poor posture.
4) Frontotemporal Dementia
This is a type of dementia that is induced through nerve cell loss in the frontal lobe. As a result, patients undergo behavioral and language changes (Banasik & Copstead, 2018).

Prompt 2: Explain in detail the difference between ischemic vs. hemorrhagic stroke.
Ischemic Stroke
This is a type of stroke that is induced when blood flow to the brain has been blocked due to the formation of a blood clot (Figure 1). The type of blood clot determines which type of Ischemic stroke the patient is experiencing. A thrombotic stroke is caused by the formation of a thrombus in the cerebral arteries. An Embolic stroke is caused by a blood clot in a distant part of the body that had an embolus break off and form a blood clot in the major blood vessels of the brain (Banasik & Copstead, 2018). The majority of patients who have suffered any type of Ischemic stroke have experienced or are experiencing numbness, weakness of one side of the body or face, and difficulty in speaking.
Hemorrhagic Stroke
This is a type of stroke that is caused due to internal bleeding in either the brain or the area between the brain and the skull (Banasik & Copstead, 2018). This is usually caused due to an extended period of hypertension. There is a high morbidity rate of a hemorrhagic stroke compared to an ischemic stroke. In other words, this can be more life-threatening.
