Once you have completed that, please start a new post below to reflect on one of the words you marked out in the poem. This is a practice in close or careful reading. The intention here is not necessarily to uncover some “deep” meaning in the poem. Instead, we are trying to figure out HOW it means. That’s a process that starts with Observations, that you then bring back to the text to find Patterns, which then raise new Questions for us to try to answer.
The post that you make below should include three parts:
Identify a word, phrase, or image you feel is significant to the poem and explain why you picked it.
Bring your observation to the rest of the poem to see if you can identify a pattern. Look for examples of repetition and reinforcement but also contradiction and complication. Explain how your observation you picked for part 1 relates to the rest of the piece.
Raise a discussion question about the pattern you found in part 2. Your question should extend the conversation in some way rather than ask for factual information.
