The Ancient Greeks believed music had the power to shape an individual’s character and they carefully regulated the musical education of young people.  In Russia, Stalin used music for propoganda, insisting that music and all the arts depict Socialist Realism.  Today we see music used in all sorts of advertisements in an attempt to influence consumers.

When I was a teenager many in my parents’ generation considered the Beatles to be a huge negative musical influence on my generation.  Today it might be heavy metal or rap that the older generation is condemning as evil or negative.

What do you think?  Does music influence behavior?  Why are we drawn to certain kinds of music?
