Covid-19 has been a significant problem for everyone but especially students in particular at the Boys and Girls Club I work at. In a work meeting a led a group among me and my coworkers on coming up with quick and efficient strategies we could gather for helping our youth academically in anyway possible. It seemed like obstacle after obstacle in a way which I expected would occur since we had never been through anything like a pandemic before. All of the kids have their own life issues going on outside of the club like not having working internet or a support system to walk them through their zoom calls and homework so pulling a few strings to stay open would make all of the difference for everyone. I put a few policies into place: Only consistent members that normally came everyday went onto the cap of 40 youth first, they had to be enrolled in school and actively taking part in classes and homework throughout the day, they had to show up on time to the club and 3 missed days counted as unenrollment as a regular school would do, and there was no leaving during this “school” timeframe for the teens even though they would normally be allowed to in regular school. The results were heartwarming. Not only did we help a huge number of our members pass that semester of their classes with our everyday guidance and support but we also received a lot of praise from parents on their gratitude towards us and efforts for their kids. I would lie to say we didn’t face some barriers in the beginning but my coworkers and I often reflect back to this experience and express happiness that we stuck through it for these kids in this difficult time of this pandemic.
