PARAGRAPH ONE
SUMMARY/PARAPHRASE/QUOTATION:
Introduce the author and the article title (Example: Bijan Stephen’s article, “How the Black Lives Matter movement uses Social Media to Fight the Power,” is a compelling article that raises many questions).
Summarize the article in 3 sentences.
Paraphrase a section that stands out to you.
Quote a sentence or 2 that look interesting.
This is one way to write an annotation, so it’s a good habit to develop now, since you’ll be doing this for six outside sources for the Research Project.
PARAGRAPH TWO
YOUR INSIGHTS:
In the 2nd paragraph, you will reflect on what you read. This can cover how you think about the argument, evidence, and the topic. It can also cover how you feel about the topic, how it relates to your own experience (or not). You will find this much easier to write if you use the 1st person singular, “I.”
Be sure you proofread, spell check, and include the citation for the author/article. Use this Sentence Revision Guide to refresh your skills.
DOUBLE check to ensure you have used quotation marks around the author’s words, and that your paraphrasing is different in both terms and structure.
