Assignment 1 Content Reviews :
500 words in total, 250 words each (excluding references)
Students will have to answer a ‘review question’ which relates to the content
of two sessions (session 2 and 3). The review questions are already available
on this module guide, see above. Students are encouraged to work on their
content review as soon as they can after the session has taken place. This will
enable them to work on their answer having just discussed and reviewed
relevant material.
Both content reviews will need to be written down and collated in ONE
document to be submitted via FASER in week 6.
The module convenor will be available to provide feedback on the first content
review in week 3 only.
12
A reference list should be included in each content review assignment.
Students are expected to engage with relevant readings and reference them
correctly. References are not included in the word count. Both content reviews
are equally weighed (50% each).

Session three – week 4 Concepts, Theory and Hypothesis
At the centre of this session is the exploration of what constitutes theory and
concepts, and why we need both in our research. We also look at when
hypothesis can be used.
Key reading
Schneiderhan, Erik (2016). Theorizing resistance. British Journal of Sociology.

This short piece can be read on its own, but it is in response to Richard
Swedberg’s BJS 2015 annual lecture entitled: ‘Before theory comes theorizing
or how to make social science more interesting’. You can watch the annual

Review Question (250 words) for Content Review
How do you understand the process of ‘theorizing’? And, to cite a provocative
question from the key reading, ‘why not just gather data?’ instead?

Session two – week 3 Ways of knowing: ontology, epistemology and
positionality
This session is dedicated to the exploration of different ways in which social
reality is made sense of and of the different ways in which we can understand
and research it. By reflecting on some of the fundamental assumptions on
what constitutes knowledge and on how we can know, we engage with the
key concepts of ontology, epistemology and positionality and discuss how
they underpin our methodological orientations, thus, ultimately, our research
designs and practices.

Review Question (250 words) for Content Review
The closer the researcher is positioned to the participants, the more likely that
there are common expectations, intentions and power equity. Discuss this
statement with the use of an example/examples from the key reading.
