“Renaissance altarpieces: the far in the near” from European art and the wider world 1350-1550 / edited by Kathleen Christian and Leah R. Clark.

Using the assigned materials as well as your textbook, please discuss in two to three pages:
1.) How did imported luxury goods, pigments, and other items from the East influence Jan Van Eyck’s Ghent Altarpiece and Andrea Mantegna’s San Zeno Altarpiece? You may bring in other artworks as well.
2.) What were artists like Van Eyck, Mantegna, and other Renaissance artists, trying to represent through these imported materials? What is tiraz? How was it utilized to represent the ideas of the artists?
3.) How does Kathleen Christian (the chapter’s author) explain the use of pseudo-Arabic scripts in Renaissance artworks?
4.) Does this seem at all incongruous to you? (There is no right or wrong answer to #4 just be sure to base your opinion on the class material).
