You have just read in Chapter 3: Culture, about ethnocentrism and cultural relativity. Your assignment for Think Piece #2 is to, first, define ethnocentrism and cultural relativity. Then reflect on the difficulties that Macionis discusses regarding how all of us struggle with cultural differences. While it is clear that ethnocentrism is not regarded favorably, what are some of the pitfalls that all of us encounter when we make a sincere effort NOT to be ethnocentric? Why is cultural relativity not only difficult to achieve but also not necessarily always the “best” answer to our dilemmas?
In order to successfully delve into this topic, in addition to having read Chapter 3, you must also have read and understood the article “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema.” The very first thing you need to have figured out is who Miner is referring to as the “Nacirema.” Be sure to include this in your think piece.
