You are to read the attached reading and then answer ONLY 1 of the three questions.
Topic 1
In what way have our examinations of culture so far shown you that our essence, as human beings, is fundamental and universal? Here’s a possible argument for anyone interested in pursuing the political implications of our aesthetic investigation. How have our works of art (our sacred objects, to now mention indigenous totem poles) revealed that there has been something universal in our species, across time and across different cultures. This was, for me, one of the reasons for creating this course: to present a version of human beings as One. We are, I think, united much more by our similarities than our differences.
Topic 2
What does a work of art say about us? How are indigenous totem poles also representative of their civilization and how they were able to so artfully relate themselves to nature? You may want to think about the nature of “spirit,” another universal concept expressed by all people. What is unique about the indigenous spirit and how is it represented in their totem poles?
Topic 3
Our first reading gave us a sense of what visual culture and the aesthetic is. Is it possible to re-think the creation of meaning and attempt to reconstruct a partial understanding of the relevance of totem poles?
