Y‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ou are to write an essay reviewing a peer-reviewed, scientific research article that applies cognitive psychology to a real-world problem and critique it. 5 articles will be available to choose from and will be posted on Blackboard under the Assessment folder. Your critique should have the three sections below. Please label each section with a header. 1. Article summary. You should first provide a summary of the paper that covers its research question, experimental method and measures, main findings, and conclusions. This should be succinct but accurate, covering the details most pertinent to understanding the logic of the study (i.e., how it tests its hypotheses). The purpose of this section is to give the reader an understanding of the study you are critiquing; no evaluation of it is necessary here. 2. Cognitive background. You should then link the paper to the relevant content you learned in this module (Dual Processing theory). Each article is aligned to one of the five weekly topics from the module. Identify and summarize, in your own words, a single concept, theory, or method that was covered in the aligned cognitive week of our module that the study relates to or makes use of. Once you have noted the connection, provide your own summary of the concept, theory, or method to introduce it‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ to the reader. The goal is to explain, or teach, this part of cognitive psychology to the reader so that they can understand how the article fits in to the broader cognitive psychology literature. When identifying how the paper connects to an idea from this module, provide an indication of where it is covered in our module, either with a reference to module content (., “… Posner’s cuing method (., “Posner’s cuing method (Andrade & May, 2004, Chapter C2). 3. Critique. Provide a critical analysis of how the concept, theory, or method has been applied. Critique the paper from the point of view of a cognitive psychologist who knows the related concept, theory, or method well. In particular, you should think about whether cognitive theory and/or methods used did or did not help to understand a real-world problem, whether they needed to be extended or adapted, whether the application highlights any shortcomings of the theory or method, or instead raises doubts about the believability of the study’s conclusions. You are welcome to discuss other aspects of the study’s application of cognitive psychology as well, but be clear about what you are discussing and be sure that it contributes to a critical analysis of how the paper is applying theory and/or method from cognit‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ive psychology.
