Writing Case Studies
** Meet Mary
Mary is an extremely sociable 3rd grader. Academically she knows a lot of content information and has a rather extensive vocabulary; however, while she can use the words when speaking, she can not spell them correctly (even common sight words like “what”). When writing she forgets to apply grammar rules, such as capitalization, and includes little detail. She has difficulty remembering to apply suggestions offered to improve her writing and has a hard time reading and concentrating on her work.
* Meet Jared
Jared is a rising 6th grader. He is full of wonderful and creative ideas. Due to a language-learning disability, it is difficult for Jared to understand and manage large amounts of verbal information. He also has significant fine motor control difficulties. He can write with a pen or pencil but very slowly. Needless to say, because of that Jared avoids writing. He considers revising and editing a punishment and quits. He can spell simple words but struggles with more difficult ones.
* Meet Ben
Ben is extremely bright 9th grader. While he knows a lot of content information, he struggles with presenting it in written form. When he writes, it is the bare minimum, even with a computer and Microsoft Word. He offers little to no detail and does not understand that his readers do not know the same information he does. He requires steady prompting and prodding to produce written work, which is usually no more than a paragraph before he is completely frustrated. While his spelling is pretty good, Ben tends to use the same words in every sentence-his written vocabulary is quite limited.
** AT for Writing Case Study Student Needs Chart: (Uploaded for you)
You will review the three writing case studies and complete the Case Study Student Needs Chart in Microsoft Word. You will identify and list each student’s strengths and struggles. You will use this information to later match student needs to specific technology tools.

** Provide 3 recommendations of tech tools and/or strategies for Mary (Only)
After identifying student needs and reviewing several AT writing tools in the AT lab you should be able to make technology recommendations matching the student’s specific needs to salient features of the technology tools.
You should consider tools to support the student throughout the writing process. I am anticipating the recommendation of at least 2-3 tools and/or strategies to support your student’s specific writing needs.
